Complete Dentures and Partial Dentures

Dentures are removable dental appliance which are used as natural-looking replacement teeth. There are two types of dentures: complete/full dentures and partial dentures.

  • Complete dentures (Full dentures) are used when all the teeth are missing. A “conventional” full denture usually takes 4 to 6 weeks as it is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed. The patient will be without teeth, during this time. Immediate dentures are made in advance and are immediately placed after the teeth are removed. Although once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made.

  • Partial dentures are used when some permanent teeth are remaining. A partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, and also prevents other teeth from shifting.

Your new Dentures can last for many years but may have to be remade, or readjusted from time-to-time. Dr. Gray suggests that you should not wear Broken or ill-fitted dentures as that can cause irritation to your gums and mouth. Proper cleaning of your dentures, good oral hygiene, regular dental visits and other care instructions will be given to aid the life of your dentures.
